Westport Nonprofits Receive $25,000 in Grants from First County Bank Foundation

Five Westport-based nonprofits recently received $25,000 in grants from the First County Bank Foundation. This year marks the first time the Westport Weston Family Y received a grant from the foundation.

“The Westport Weston Family Y plans to use the money toward scholarships for underprivileged families in its Early Learning Program,” said First County Bank Foundation Vice President Katherine Harris. “We look forward to hearing more success stories from the Family Y in the future.”

Additionally, the foundation granted $10,000 to Homes with Hope’s Bacharach Community, an emergency shelter for homeless single mothers and their children. Interfaith Housing Association dba Homes with Hope is a local grassroots response to the tragedy of homelessness. With a caring professional staff and the help of more than 400 volunteers, Homes with Hope assists people who have lost their ability to lead normal lives.

“Connecticut had more than 33,000 people homeless and nearly half of those were children last year. All of us need to do more to help these families find affordable housing,” suggested Harris, who is also president and chief operating officer of First County Bank. Bacharach Community, located on Wassell Lane in Westport, with an additional facility on the Post Road, provides emergency shelter for up to six families headed by single women.

Last year the First County Bank Foundation awarded more than $591,000 to 110 nonprofit organizations throughout lower Fairfield County. Since its inception in 2001, the foundation has awarded a total of 644 individual grants, worth more than $4.6 million.

To be eligible for First County Bank Foundation grants, organizations must have nonprofit tax exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; be located in Stamford, Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk or Westport; have community support; address community needs; have measurable outcomes; and demonstrate fiscal and administrative responsibility. Special consideration is given to those agencies or programs benefiting low to moderate income populations.
